Dinosaur or digimeister - the challenges and opportunities presented by social media for leaders
Venue: The Groucho Club, 45 Dean Street, Soho, London W1
When: Tuesday 20 July 2010, 08:15-13:00
Invitation one: breakfast
Social Media is changing the way that people live, work and play. Our world is one where the 2010 election was widely dubbed as the first Social Media Election, Dell recently tweeted up $3m in revenue and an individual can topple Simon Cowell to an X Factor Christmas number 1 by mobilising an audience on facebook – interesting times.
The democratisation and globalisation of media coupled with the increasing ubiquity of technology led means for conversation and dialogue are having profound effects on the relationships that people have with each other and the brands, products and services around them. Relationships are brokered online, loyalty created, and attention gained or lost. This environment has created notable changes in behaviour, with an increasing propensity to share, create transparency and develop personal brands all contributing to a world of new business and personal opportunity (and potential pitfalls).
There are growing numbers of organisations and their CEO’s who are embracing social media with significant business gain, whilst at the same time there is a rich landscape of recent learning from organisations who have been less successful in their efforts to enter the fray of social media conversation.
Within this changing landscape leaders must be fluent in digital to ride the wave of opportunity – futurists say that within two years corporate leaders will need to be digitally fluent to qualify for the job.
Join us to explore the challenges & opportunities Social Media presents for leaders and hear about examples from IBM, Asda, Zappos, & Dell.
Invitation two: the deeper dive
Stop press: Asda's Dominic Burch, Head of Corporate Communications, to give the Asda perspective on the challenge & opportunities presented by social media for organizational leaders as part of the deeper dive.
We have pleasure in advising you that Asda's Dominic Burch, Head of Corporate Communications, has agreed to give the Asda perspective on the topic at the deeper dive part of the networking and learning event at the Groucho Club on 20th July which we are running with Ben Hart from Atmosphere.
We will cover two topics
Discovery
- Where is your organization on its employee engagement journey?
- Where is your organization on its digital journey?
- What is the level of readiness of your leaders to be early digital adopters?
Five components of digital leadership fluency
- Creating the right coalition in your organisation
- Initiating the digital discovery process
- Enabling and encouraging leaders to be visible in the social media space
- Integrating digital approaches into an overall engagement plan
- Overcoming objections and the practicalities of implementation
The headline results of our research across UKPLC include:
- Increased evidence for our contention that well governed ‘power sharing’ is the primary driver of engagement
- However there is still confusion between communication & engagement; they are complementary but not the same
- There is a substantial performance improvement for those who engage with this approach
- Engagement is primarily brought about by leader engagement capabilities – the research clearly validates our capability & skills set
- Few organizations are exploiting the benefits of effective engagement; there is great scope to build competitive advantage
- Investment in engagement is rising
- There are generational differences in levels of engagement
- The Large FTSE and public sector organisations are less effective at engaging their people than smaller businesses & charities.
Joining us will be Dr Michael Wagstaff & Tasha Satara from YouGov who will present our findings. We will provide commentary on the significance for organizations and point the direction for this vital business topic.
