The Engaging for Success report and next steps In 2009, the government commissioned David MacLeod and Nita Clarke to undertake an independent review exploring the benefits and drivers of employee engagement in the workplace and its impact on UK competitiveness.

The review involved discussion with a wide range of employers, HR practitioners, employee engagement specialists and representative bodies. The resulting report identifies and presents a compelling case for the impact of employee engagement on business success: in areas such as productivity, voluntary turnover, absence rates, innovation and competitiveness. It articulates key enablers for effective engagement and also identifies barriers.

David MacLeod will review the key conclusions of the review and talk about subsequent activity, including a national campaign which aims to raise awareness of the ‘what’, ‘why’ ‘how’ of employee engagement.

David MacLeod

David has a portfolio of responsibilities, which include being a Non Executive Director of the Department for International Development, Non Executive Director of the Ministry of Justice, Fellow of the Sunningdale Institute and Visiting Professor of the Cass Business School. He is also a Fellow of the RSA, Institute of Marketing and Ashridge Business School.

Early in his career, David was Head of Marketing for the Dulux brand before going on to manage businesses in both Europe and then globally. In these roles he helped drive considerable business change, which made him well placed to take up a post in 2001 as the Cabinet Office's Senior Advisor on Change and Performance.

He has co-authored a book called the The Extra Mile on the theme of how to engage your people to win and is co-author of the MacLeod Report to Government called Engaging for Success.
